Hi,
Back to the currect design:
Will the "OpenOffice.org 2.0 Components" list stay on the homepage or is it just part of the major new item? I assume the OOo 2.0 announcement isn't going to stay there untill the next release so if this list is important enough to keep, it might be better to position it elsewhere. Personally I don't see the point in keeping it on the main page for long, people will get to know this soon enough if they come to a page with a bit more info about the OOo package.
There are always new users, so it will stay on the homepage. I'm not in favor of it either, I'd favour a product tour or something on a different page, but this choice has been made.
On of the major things I think that should be changed is the current footer of the site. I think that's the thing that makes the site have a bit of a messy look. Does that much text realy have to included? I suggest to keep just the sponsor logo's (if they realy have to stay in) and the current (reduced in size) links. Having two links to the Sun site is a bit much as well, the text link can be removed and the "Sponsored by" text can be positioned above the Sun logo.
Valid points, though I'm not the one to decide upon this...
Some of the links could go as well. Does e.g. the "Todo" link have any additional value for the "normal" user? This kind of info is something that belongs to a dev section of the project site. The people who realy like to know this will know that they can find it there, don't they?
Well, the todo is at a good place imho at the footer, which isn't such a prominent place after all imho.
The menu bar could use a bit more distinction between the different menu items. Maybe this would be something we could partially "borrow" from the "new design".
Changing to more tabs would change quite a bit in my design... maybe we could add some more spacing, and add underlines for certain letters (in combination with access keys) which makes the menu function more clear.
The 3 big buttons on the left don't realy fit into the current design. Maybe it's an idea to make them look a bit more like the new design of the OOo document icons.
Agree, and I'll work on these. Everyone else having good design talents are more than welcome to help out...
And finally, the login section need to be blend into the site a bit more. I think a bit of repositioning in that corner and a slight change of color would be sufficient. Yes, we could partially "borrow" it from the "new design" again. This will give us best of both worlds! ;-)
The login still needs to be replaced by a search box... that's what I'm waiting for.
g.,
Maarten
