We had lengthy discussions about that. And strong voices said that the
centerpiece must be the download.

Why not simply update the "New user & general info" page so that it
acutally fits?
As you pointed out, it is not a problem finding that button. And that
page is exactly supposed to please new users, not the frontpage.

We could make a prominent Section "About the Product" vs. "About the
Community" vs. "About the Website".

The short component descriptions would fit into the About the Product
section.

See above. The frontpage should not explain everything, but provide easy
to access links to the relevant sections. The page for new users, the
downloads, the news. A supplement to the main-navigation bar at the top
with links to Support, the Contributing pages, the My Pages portal and
the Project page.

We had a discussion about this too. And we decided that choose your
language doesn't fit since it suggests the user that he will get a
translated version of the homepage. But this is not the case. The
native-lang projects are individual, seperate projects with different
contents, with different backgrounds/Communities behind.

As mentioned above, I'd like to see the short product-descriptions in
the "new user" page, but I don't think it fits for the main-page. When
we designed it, one of the goals was to put as few text as possible on
the it to not distract the user from the navigation.

But others may have a different opinion..

ciao
