The links on the home page are designed to take potential *users* to a
description of what each component of OOo does. So, when Base became a
separate 'standalone' component, it got its own link
http://www.openoffice.org/product/base.html (and the Base folks asked
for a link to their project page, which is now on the bottom of the page
"For more information, please see the Base project page").

If Chart becomes a separate 'standalone' component, then we can do the
same.

There's two separate issues here:

- Home Page links to Product Modules or Project Pages?
First, it would be nice to make the project home pages (that's http://sc.openoffice.org etc.) the first stop for anyone interested in one of the modules. Until now, these pages were targeted only at developers, we should change that. That doesn't mean duplicating user and marketing related material, but rather linking to it. http://www.openoffice.org/product/calc.html would be one of the first links on the "new" Calc page ("what's this all about?"). As a result, we would no longer have user and developer pages separated so much, and perhaps this would encourage more users to also consider helping with development (including QA).

Which also could be achieved by pointing from the product pages
(http://www.openoffice.org/product/writer.html) to the project pages
(http://sw.openoffice.org).
I'm not sure whether it's a good idea to guide "consumers" through the
project pages. I have to admit that I'm a proponent of the idea to
separate sites for consumers and contributors.

- Which Modules/Projects should we link to?
Second, Chart is always lost somewhere between the projects. By structure (cvs etc.), it's part of "Graphics Applications", but people tend to think of it as part of the module into which a chart is inserted (often Calc). If we had a separate link to a Chart page on the front page, it would be easier to find - and it should be found, with the new chart coming up and a beta already available.
What should the criteria be? I'm not against an icon for Chart, but
wouldn't "Installation" be worth a dedicated icon too? And what about
"Accessibility"? Ok, that's going too far.
My subjective, random conclusion would be to replace Math with Chart on the home page and as an item on product pages (http://www.openoffice.org/product/).

And let us add number three:

- More Emphasis on "Contributors" on the Home Page?
Besides the product/projects question there have some ideas raised we
could pick up.
* Add an additional "blue button" for "Developers" (whatever the name
should be) pointing to an entry page (a revamped
http://development.openoffice.org/index.html).
* Add a green (red, ...) "join (with upwards arrow)" button
* Add "source" and/or "developer snapshot" link in the green download button

And number four:

- Revamp key contributing / development pages:
http://development.openoffice.org/
http://projects.openoffice.org/
http://download.openoffice.org (wrt snapshots)
and the wiki main page...

Number five is the effort to
- Restructure dev project home pages and content

Greetings
Stefan
