Hi Kay,

Tested in IE 6, Opera 9.5, Firefox 3 and Safari 3 on Win XP.
Each involved a delay while Java loaded.

IE6 and Firefox 3 detected Java immediately (and correctly), while
Opera 9.5 and Safari had null.
After window.onload, they all detected Java correctly.

Ivan...thanks for the reply. Alex is also using Opera 9.5 with some issues, unfortunately. Yes, we will have delays with the applet load, but it can't be helped. Not all browsers support LiveConnect, and that's just a fact of life, so we need to live with it, I'm afraid.

The question becomes...do we want them to have a slight delay in determining their setup...or just automatically dump them in the "you don't have a JRE installed" bucket.

I doubt if anything can be done at this point for some of the more esoteric "flavors" of JRE implementation like Joe's Icetea. Also I don't know if these kinds of JRE implementations are really what's required for using OOo, so I need to investigate that in a bit.

more later...

Hello all--

Ok, here's another Java test page to try...

http://website.openoffice.org/tryouts/Kay/download/appletDocWrite.html

...
navigator.userAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.1)
Gecko/2008071615 Fedora/3.0.1-1.fc9 Firefox/3.0.1
navigator.platform: Linux i686
navigator.appVersion: 5.0 (X11; en-US)
navigator.javaEnabled(): true

Immediate result...
Java version: null
Java vendor: null

window.onload...
Java version: null
Java vendor: null

FF3 on Fedora 9 uses the Java-compatible GCJ/Icedtea plugin, and most sites
that use Java applets work fine for me.
