I wouldn't say they're exactly standard width (e.g. Discuss vs. Move). However, looking at the HTML structure, I could try to make the <li> house the left background image, and the <a> link house the right side of the image. Or vice versa for accessibility reasons (the <a> would have a negative left margin to cover the whole <li> mouseover area. I'll give this a try tomorrow. Maybe > a wiki page ;-) Having had a look through some of the 2008 OOoCon slides, Clayton's "The State of the Documentation Project" says that Martina Waller is working on a style guide for the wiki, which I think is badly needed. Even basic things like structure and categorization leave something to be desired. These are probably the easiest and most important areas of improvement. In either case, Clayton will be able to point you in the right direction and any help is always appreciated!
