At first look, I think the whitespace35 test is simply wrong. The spec isn't a "little vague" about whitespace stripping here. It doesn't say anything about it, which means whitespace nodes should not be stripped. If I'm missing something in the XSLT 1.0 spec that indicates whitespace nodes should be stripped here, please point it out.
