Hello Laurent,

Nitpick: OpenDocument uses a RelaxNG, not a DTD.

Could you confirm that if a document is valid agains the OpenDocument DTD, OOo will always open it ?

I'm not the most expert person here, but my understanding is "yes" with the caveat below:

Does it exists format features in OOo not checked by the DTD ?

There is one. OpenDocument does not include a specification for spread sheet formulas. This is actively being worked on. Remember that OpenDocument is a dynamic and evolving spec. The OpenFormula project is writing the specification for spread sheet formulas to be added to OpenDocument.

Since you are comparing OpenDocument with WordML I should mention that Microsoft's format doesn't have a formula specification either. And between the two formats, OpenDocument is the one that is doing something about the problem.

This is important, because we have internally hot debates on Word XML versus OOo XML.

OpenDocument is definitely superior :)

In addition to this list, another place where you can get good technical help with OpenDocument is the developers list of the OpenDocument Fellowship. Send an email to:

I say that because that list is more active than this one. So you might get a response sooner. And we'll be happy to help you prepare a case for OpenDocument.

Cheers,
Daniel.
