Could you confirm that if a document is valid agains the OpenDocument DTD, OOo will always open it ?
Does it exists format features in OOo not checked by the DTD ?

I can't comment on how OOo handles the XML, but let me clarify a few XML issues:

1)  OpenDocument is expressed as a RELAX NG schema; not a DTD

2) RELAX NG is more expressive than XSD, and so would be less likely to run into the problem you note that MS cites (I had no idea they admit they don't fully conform to their schema!)
