If you don't object to having a program written in Java or Ruby or
Python/Jython that can do that heavy computation, I'd say that would be
the way to go.
btw, we use Apache Cocoon/Lenya on the server side to generate for
instance the ODT,
whereas one can also use Cocoon on the command line.
