After reading through the discussion on IRC I feel an Adium specific solution is the best approach. I'm a bit hesitate on relying on Growl framework, as from what I gather this would make notifications grouped under Growl, which would raise question marks for users who haven't bought Growl and don't know what it is.
I feel the best solution is as follows: OS is 10.6 or 10.7? Default to what happens right now. OS is 10.8+ and Growl is not installed? Rename Growl events to NC events in the "Events" pane and use NC over Mist. OS is 10.8+ and Growl is installed? Show both Growl and NC events in the "Events" pane as options, default to NC events.
