This change is to replace the kernel console '''fbcon''' with the userspace
console '''kmscon''' in Fedora, to provide an enhanced and more secure
console for Fedora users.

How does this work for special boot modes, like stopping in dracut or
"emergency"-style boots?

This change is only about regular VT, when your session is fully operational.

Special boot modes should be unaffected, and still use fbcon.
Also if kmscon doesn't start, systemd will automatically revert to getty/fbcon.

But for long term, we will need to handle that with kmscon, it's just not ready for F44.

Do old-style console utilities still work? For example, when I need to
boot without X on high-DPI displays, the first thing I usually run is
"setfont -d" to increase the font size to something legible.

kmscon has a keyboard shortcut to adjust font size with "ctrl +" / "ctrl -" like most graphical terminal.

You can also rotate the screen with "ctrl super +" and "ctrl super -" (on latest git).

Also kmscon uses the xkbcommon library, so loadkeys won't work as it sets up the kernel keyboard layout. But by default kmscon uses the dbus org.freedesktop.locale1 to get the system keyboard config.

But you can override it in /etc/kmscon/kmscon.conf if needed.
