startplasma (as the successor to startkde) is pretty well known and
people do regularly use it. That said, it's been a full blown program
for quite some time. I was thinking that if this is going to be a
thing, I'd inject a wrapper to deal with it until the program itself
is adapted to handle this case.

But this is not unique to Plasma. Pretty much all freestanding Wayland
compositors support and document launching from the console, so
breaking all that kind of stinks.
