Recently, a new law was passed in California that requires OS vendors
to provide some limited info about a user's age via an API that
application distribution websites and application stores can use.

To make it short: read the last two lines down at the bottom, it's out of your hands guys.

the horse is already dead, before it even started to run:

- geolocation is not an exact measurement.
- any kid can change the age in a database, because this is open source. Even if a particular kid can't , it will just ask friends or the internet.
- anyone heared that humans lie?
- btw.. there are VPNs .. ups.
and finally, you can install your pc in location A and use it location B.. ups

conclusion: it's impossible for a os to verify the age of a subject without a nation wide authentication system. Guess what kids do not have! an id card.

Dear Lawmakers: Reality kicks in hard here.

A better approach comes from the EU:

a) only services and apps that need a verification ask for it.
b) services that need a age verification >= 16y can expect the user to have an offical id. c) the EU wants a system, where you do not give your full id with all data to the site/app thats need it, the state infrastructure just confirms the anonym ID is over age, whatever age the service asks for

That way, free "adult" services can confirm the minimum age, but the users can stay as anonym as they can.

The Surprise it: it will work logically in reallife, if the state infrastructure is finally rdy.

Simple as it is: RED HAT is liable and therefor need to decide what to do next.
