Dear colleagues,

As we’ve already announced, we are going to land OpenSSL 4 in rawhide.

We used a dedicated copr repo [1] to check the compatibility of builds and
were able to either rebuild or propose patches to most of the packages.
Also as OpenSSL 4.0 was released more than a month ago, a plenty of
packages have been fixed upstream to restore the compatibility and we hope
that some of these fixes have already landed in rawhide.

We kindly ask the maintainers of the packages we’ve created the patches
against to merge these patches or move to the latest upstream version in
case when upstream has been adopted to the recent version of OpenSSL.
Otherwise the patches will be merged and built by proven packagers (Yaakov
Selkowitz and Stephen Gallagher) on or soon after Friday, June 12th.

We are going to establish a side-tag and rebuild OpenSSL 4, OpenSSL 3, and
openssh in it. We are also planning to rebuild the packages that we’ve
successfully rebuilt in the COPR repo. We expect that maintainers of other
packages will rebuild their packages using that side tag. After that is
complete, the side tag will be merged into rawhide. During this period, it
is important that if you have a package that depends on OpenSSL, you do not
build it directly in Rawhide without coordinating with us. This will avoid
conflicts when we merge the side-tag.

We were waiting for the OpenSSL security releases that happened today to
avoid extra churn. We are going to start the rebuild on Friday, June 12,
and plan to merge it on Wednesday, Jun 17, 2026.

I hope that this will work for most packages. We are still open to help
with any particular problems on adapting your packages for OpenSSL 4.
