I don't know what "default configuration" means, but the default install
of sssd-kcm just works, at least on RHEL9.  It doesn't use an OTP for
the renewal.  I posted back in the original thread about it in headless
VMs I use for Fedora with occasional fkinit -- definitely no Gnome, even
if that also does renewals.  It should be easy enough to spin up a VM or
container to check.
