I have no experience compiling DD-WRT and their documentation is not too
encouraging ("Building DD-WRT from source is difficult and according to the
text here definitely not working on first try")
But o11s only requires:

1. a kernel that has been properly configured (CONFIG_MAC80211_MESH=y)
2. iw (to setup an open mesh)
and/or
3. authsae/wpa_supplicant (to setup a secure mesh)
4. a driver+hardware that supports mac80211 (ath9k is highly recommended)

openwrt simplifies mesh configuration because some options can be set via
their Unified Configuration Interface. See for instance the mode and the
mesh_id options here:

802.11s funtionality ?

With the caveat of not having tried it myself, my guess is yes.

distro ? Is it just a matter of setting some compile options ? Or do I
need to port modules which are not normally included?

It is well integrated. The open mesh functionality is part of the kernel
so all it needs is to be compiled with that option. A secure mesh will
additionally need a userpace daemon, authsae or wpa_supplicant.

Best,

Javier
