Anything that uses a mac80211 based driver will work... but isn't the
rt2800usb driver pretty unstable?

I've had to do some hacking on the driver source to get a rt2800usb
based device working on my Linux laptop. I would recommend an adapter
that uses an ath9k chip, like this one: amzn.to/1kEtGiZ , or this one:
http://amzn.to/LaVaMU .

Side note: on my Pi I've had problems with certain USB units drawing
"too much" power (this one in particular: http://amzn.to/K7aAlh) and
causing the Pi to freeze, I think the solution there would be to use a
powered usb hub, but I haven't tried yet.

Check out this page for more ideas: http://elinux.org/RPi_USB_Wi-Fi_Adapters .
