Hello Jason, You're right with Atheros chips, they work a lot better.
I havent seen a lot of problems with rt2800usb and the 3.3 and 3.10 kernel series, although i admit i haven't tested extensively. I do recall having to disable powermanagement. As to the powered USB hub, true, forgot to mention that. That is a necessity.
