Speaking about git history, don't know why I didn't think of it the first place:
it could be done this way (idea):
cp -r overlay overlay-gen
mv overlay overlay-sab
rm overlay-gen/sab-stuff
rm overlay-sab/gen-stuff
ZzZ.
