The difference is not so much the resolution but the dot clock. DVI-D single link is limited to 165Mhz ("copper barrier"). All above requires dual link, and the maximum is 330Mhz.


However, some hardware does not allow using these bandwidths; many single link cards are limited to 108Mhz (such as the SiS 301 ones).
