Ooh, here's a different idea — if TfL or some other regional bus authority had 
a plan to install something like this:

then you'd just need to get people to "scan in" and "scan out" as they get 
on/off the bus. The server would log the times, and a cookie in the browser 
would help you identify the handset.

Some group of keen hackers could even offer to build the infrastructure, using 
TfL's newly released timetable data, if TfL would take charge of displaying a 
QR code at each bus stop. So travellers get some useful information, and said 
hackers start to build up a dataset of travel times.
