Is it not the case that most people who would be sufficiently engaged
with the public transport system to want to contribute their data are
regular commuters, who make the same journey, or a small number of
different journeys, regularly? In which case all of the journey set-up
can be done once (and perhaps at a computer rather than when mobile),
with a much simplified mobile app which allows the selection of one of
a few pre-configured journeys and a 'start' and 'stop' button.

Sure, this won't cover everyone. But I'm guessing it would engage
enough people to start to provide useful data.
