I think we've established that it does need some kind of user interaction at the beginning and end of the journey; the "constant monitor" idea has too many pitfalls (battery life, privacy, signal/noise, i.a.) > If you want to fancy it up, you could make it show bus stops within 50m and > let you select the one you are at when you get on, and again when you get off. That would actually be an advantage of the QR code idea (which I can see would require a lot more hard work and cooperation with transport authorities), but if the user gets her phone out to scan the QR code, it can be busy getting a GPS fix while the information comes down from the server, which is then sent back to the server along with a timestamp when she hits the "getting on the bus now" button.
