They have plenty to gain from pledges - the votes of people who believe in what the politician is pledging.

I'd suggest:

* Avoid specifics and question them on general concepts - eg not "Vote
against tuition fees" and instead "Try to keep the cost of education
to a minimum".

The difficulty with that sort of question is that every single politician will answer "yes", just like every one will say "I want Britain to have a world-class health system" and "I will take measures to reduce crime". The more general the question, the less it helps you to differentiate between the candidates.
