Incidentally, if you're wondering why the stats at
http://www.phoutcomes.info are 'important' then one answer is probably
something like this:
* the stats at http://www.phoutcomes.info will be used to inform
Clinical Commissioning Groups and the Health & Wellbeing boards
(via Joint Strategic Needs Assessment). These bodies have
statutory duties;
* Billions of pounds, literally, of public money ('your and my
money') will be spent on clinical and 'public health'
interventions partially guided by the above (and national
Government priorities ...);
* Understanding of illness and causation helps to inform political
priorities and public attitudes (which in turn shape political
priorities) and which shape society and its organisation/working.
Of course, politics isn't quite this simple ...
To give a example (and I choose this particular example since I'm
working on air pollution at the moment):
It is estimated that in 2008 there were 29,000 premature deaths in
the UK attributed to long term exposure to air pollution
(particulates -- PM2.5), mostly from road traffic. This compares
with 2,222 people killed in road traffic collisions in 2009, 15,479
deaths partially or wholly attributable to alcohol in England in
2010 and 81,700 deaths wholly or partially attributable to smoking
in 2010. (source: GLA document - ask if you want specific ref.)
(I suppose if the Govt. aren't informing the public properly about this
then there's the possibility of a funded mySociety type project?)
Best wishes,
Andrew

Anna, Andrew, Pete and Matthew - Brilliant! Thank-you so much for
emailing the list with the suggestions re.mapping the health stats
from http://www.phoutcomes.info. This is really helpful; it all seems
so daunting without a little direction. As has been said many times
before - the first step of any journey is often the most difficult.
All the best, Andrew

That's because the Guardian table [2] has district councils,
whilst the PH data [3] uses county councils. If you use the
County Council boundaries from the Guardian's
https://www.google.com/fusiontables/DataSource?dsrcid=1668120
(can't merge, as that one doesn't have ONS codes annoyingly), and
download CSV/reimport to allow you to actually edit the KML
