I am currently not at work, so I haven't read and cannot react on 
everything.
However please note that redesigning the JDBC module and related classes 
is a step in the Optimization project.
The plan there was that the Jdbc module should become an alternate 
datasource implementation, one that you can plug in and use if, for some 
reason, appserver datasources are not available (like when running the 
test classes).
I do think we need an alternate implementation, if only to facilitate an 
easy way to move from the old configuration to the new.
