The difference between an application and a contribution does not
really interest me. Actually, there is no technical difference, and
the only difference is 'political', and as such it is only a flag
meaning the amount of support it ought to receive.  I think life would
be less horrible if at least that insignificant flag. which could in
principle change any time, and has little practical consequences, has
no influence any more on the entire location of the thing in the
repository.  My preference would be to move the remaining things under
contributions to applications, drop the 'contributions' directory and
forget about the whole issue altogether. We can add a simple note
about the status of directory of code in the pom.xml or so, as a less
involving alternative.
