I'm referring to version/maintainer of the *application*. These are checked right now, and they should be. The maintainer attribute is needed to uniquely identify an application. E.g. application "Basics" with maintainer "mmbase.org" is not the same application als "Basics" with maintainer "finalist.com". In addition, I think it's obvious that you might want to specify the required version as well. Regarding both required maintainer and version: If these don't both match the available applications, the depending application cannot be installed. I don't see how the system can be expected to work without these restrictions.
