Unless people want to see this as a hack (which needs a vote), I plan to treat this as a bugfix for 1.8 only.
Requirements:
- patching of Dove aso it returns a size attribute for binary fields
- patching of wizard xsl so it will use the size attribute to determine if a binary field contains data
