Darrell,
Great words... I, too, share the shock and horror. I grew up in
southern Connecticut about 1.5 hours outside of NYC and have
travelled into and through the city very frequently throughout
my life. I have taken many friends who were visiting into the
city and often we went up to the top of the World Trade Center to
look around. Whether driving or flying, those two towers were always
a landmark to be seen at the southern end of the Manhatten island.
It is incomprehensible to me that they simply no longer exist.
Earlier in my life, I spent over 10 years as a volunteer firefighter and
we had some training for disasters. We went through drills with triage,
incident command systems, and integration of different agencies. But no
amount of preparation or training can even remotely begin to prepare
for an event of this magnitude. It is far too overwhelming.
I cannot even begin to comprehend the chaos that Orville and all
the others down there are dealing with right now. My thoughts are
with the families of the victims and also with all the rescuers
working to find those who may yet bet alive.
It is, indeed, a time of great sadness.
