Wow, this topics is still confusing....
Just to clearify the contents of this email:
- subject : Samba as domain-controller on 5.1 alpha (samba 2.2.1a)
- topic: where to put (hidden) roving/roaming user profiles
Logon home vs logon logon path
----------------------------------------------
1) Not-so very clear, as Samba changed a bit since 2.07 regarding
the logon path and logon home setting.
2) Documentations lags somewhat behind.
3) Roaming profiles support is different for Win9x and WinNT.
To support Win9x -clients with roving/roaming user profiles , you need logon
home.
To support WinNt/2000 -clients with roving/roaming user profiles, you need
logon path
# logon HOME = UNC path to the user home directory,
# (partly) used for profile by Win9x clients
logon home = \\%N\%U\.profile
# logon PATH = UNC path to the directory where the profile should
# be stored, used for roving profile by NT clients
logon path = \\%N\%U\.profile
So, all in all , one could choose to use :
logon home = \\%N\%U\.profile
logon path = \\%N\%U\.profile
to support *both* types of clients (win9x and NT/2000) *and* hide the
profile-dir
As you can see above, i opt for ".profile", not ".profiles" as the name
for the directory with the user profile. It is really for *one* user.
Towards to topic of clients maintaining connections, and so causing problems
when using a profile-directory inside the \\%N\%U share : i have not yet
seen them with either 2.07 or 2.2.1. But, YMMV.
If we would choose to differ the profile location between NT and 9x clients,
and
your clients use a heteregenous network consisting of 9x/NT/2000-boxes,
users may ask where their docs etc are...
Using one location might prevent that, and is easier from a administration-
perspective.
