I use a straight logging system (as I replied to you off-list. See: http://midas.psi.ch/elog/ I have used this for project tracking as well as trouble tickets. It is highly configurable, and has some security built in as well. It can also be set to auto-send an e-mail if an entry meets certain criteria you set, such as Author or from a specific location, etc.
Have thought about trying to set this up on my SME box to work with a couple guys across the country on a project I'm involved in, but haven't set up a SME box with the devtools to build it on yet. I could also just set it up on an internal box and port-forward to it. Hope this helps.
