I've had experience of HP-DDS3 drives being slow too.  I thought it was
because they aren't capable of fast spooling/seeking, but another engineer
was telling me it might be related to the level of detail about what's on
the tape and where.  Some commercial offerings, like Arcserve, seem to
have a more detailed catalogue of every block on the tape and zoom
straight to it and restore files in seconds rather than the minutes (or
tens of minutes) I experience under flexbackup on my DDS3.  I might test 
this with a DDS4 I have access to...
