Hi Robert, thank you for being the first respondent who has stayed on topic with an actual rsback question :-> > You have chosen /backup as the backup directory would it not be easier > for the user or at least onsite admin to make it almost "self serve" > backup and save to a pre-determined ibay name [excluded in the exclude > file] and then change the ownership to admin admin. Among my many design considerations where these concepts: [Backup to Tape as the primary solution] Nothing beats a good tape drive backup. Period. For those that want a fancy backup scenario, every good Enterprise level tape backup software already offers the capability to backup/restore to/from various destinations (servers/workstations) either local or remote. [Backup to disk as a secondary option] Rsback to disk is the secondary online archive method. Online meaning the backup is on disk for a quick restore. [Retain rights/ownership] I wanted a system that would retain all rights and ownership as a key component of the backup. Changing or loosing rights/ownership would potentially make a restore inconvenient to next to impossible. Retaining rights/ownership makes a restore immediate and simple. [Admin access only] I wanted a system that was only accessible by the admin. In other words if the admin 'knows what they are doing', they can perform the restore. If not they call us, their support professional, to perform the restore. As the backup is on disk, it takes only minutes to initiate an SSH remote restore and we need no further onsite admin assistance (no tape to mount, etc). This means we can launch the restore at our convenience (after hours, weekends, etc). Remember on disk is a weeks worth of daily archives and a months worth of weekly archives, all hard linked to reduce overall space. (Also note the user-manager package offers a user initiated home dir backup/restore to desktop option) [Backup destination] Currently this initial beta release is hard coded to /backup for a backup to disk. When everyone takes a moment to read the rsback docs... ;-> everyone will see the tremendous potential of this product. I plan on templating the backup destination in future builds so that your backup destination can be '/backup' or via secure SSH to a backup host computer (another SME box) either onsite or a remote offsite host!!!
