Interesting conversation on IIP (my side wasn't much interest):

windows versionSuggestions? A) Provide some suggestions in the documentation for the config options. This is easily accomplished. B) Make the wininstaller ask the user if he is on broadband or a modem, and set the limits accordingly, with an advanced limits dialog. If one of the windows maintainers would look at this that would be really cool. C) Set the default bwlimits to something suitable for a broadband node. This is shooting ourselves in the foot to save the whole leg IMHO... so maybe worthwhile. D) Complain loudly and explain about bwlimits, on the web interface, in a box, if running transient? Suggested defaults: 57.6/33kbps (good modem) is 7.2kB/sec and 4.1kB/sec. Suggested limits 3.6kB/sec and 2kB/sec. However, selecting the "modem" option should set the node to transient mode, so bwlimits are largely unnecessary. 512/128kbps (typical entry level cable in my country) is 64kB/sec and 16kB/sec. Suggested limits 32kB/sec down, 8kB/sec up. 1024/256 (typical mid range cable or DSL in my country) is 128kB/sec down, 32kB/sec up. Suggest 64kB/sec down, 16kB/sec up. Also, entry level DSL here is 512/256. So there is some question over what is a sane level, and we can't generally expect the user to know the answer. Also, we want freenet to provide good download speeds... limiting ourselves to half the user's bandwidth is not going to do this... we could reasonably easily (perhaps not for this release) provide an on the fly config option change (or an FCP command) to enable/disable, or change the level of, bandwidth limiting.
