No it's not, because of the stop, start and parity bits. Each byte that goes out over a modem takes *ten* bits (8 data bits, 1 start bit, 1 stop bit at 8N1; or 7 data bits, 1 start bit, 1 stop bit and 1 parity bit at 7E1). Also, no modem in the USA can actually achieve 56 kbps down because the phone lines are limited to something just below that. Also, modems can't achieve full duplex speeds; if you're downloading at 40 kbps you cannot upload at the full 33.6 kbps. > Also, entry level DSL here is 512/256. It's a very difficult issue. :-/ On a related note, it's very difficult to use firewall queueing facilities to manage Freenet bandwidth, because by its very design Freenet traffic tries to avoid being easily tagged. If anyone has any suggestions on how to tell my OpenBSD router which packets coming from the NATted Linux box are Freenet packets, that'd be really nice.
