I'm sure that the vast majority of us are computer nerds and, as such, have read the
book "Criptonomicon" by Neal Stephenson.

I have very little idea how to implement this, but Freenet might make a viable
platform for anonymous online micropayments.

It seems to me that to do that, we would need another model for currency. The only
reason that the USD has value is that people agree that it has value. It doesn't even
have a gold backing anymore.

It would be difficult for any mostly-distributed community such as this to create a
gold-backed currency, so it would make sense that we should use something that already
has a value as a currency. Could we use bandwidth as a currency?

Though I haven't check the archives, I'm assuming that this has been proposed at some
point. (I'll check them out now -- just thought that I'd bring the issue up)

Appended are the [partial] lyrics to the song "Money" by Pink Floyd -- just for good
measure.

Money - by Pink Floyd

Money, get away
Get a good job with more pay and your O.K.
Money it's a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
New car, caviar, four star daydream,
Think I'll buy me a football team
Money get back
I'm all right Jack keep your hands off my stack.
Money it's a hit
Don't give me that do goody good bullshit
I'm in the hi-fidelity first class traveling set
And I think I need a Lear jet
Money it's a crime
Share it fairly but don't take a slice of my pie
Money so they say
Is the root of all evil today
But if you ask for a rise it's no surprise that they're
giving none away
