I have disabled the debugging options, and set exported LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1 - and it still dies. I will now try LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 but I am not hopeful. And I can't even go back to linux 2.4 without significant hassle because of an LVM bug. :(
