Well.. firstly, we already have the infrastructure to support multiple compression and archiving standards. Secondly, when the user doesn't mind it taking ages, (e.g. because the insert itself will take much longer), bzip2 sometimes provides better compression than 7zip. Thirdly, bzip2 is much slower than gzip; 7zip is faster than bzip2 (I think), but is also slower than gzip.
