That is *DEFINITELY* the wrong direction. Intelligence reports are only useful
if they are corroborated, which means they belong on uservoice, not on the bug
tracker. Stuff on the bug tracker needs to either be:
a) Reported by a user with an email address whom we can at least in theory
contact, or
b) Reported by a developer, possibly on the basis of intelligence reports.
I agree that we should always have a contact e-mail address of any bug
reporter.
When saying "without doing a full sign up" I'm trying to say that simply
specifying an e-mail address should be enough! I see no reason why we
should force every bug reporter to create *YET ANOTHER* site-specific
user account (which it isn't even, as it won't work for the wiki or
uservoice or anything else at all) - something they most likely already
have bazillions of. Chances are that they will only ever use this
account once or twice.
I do not believe isolating our bug tracker helps our overall information
flow. We have a lot of valuable information laying around in the bug
tracker - information that we are now hide from the public. We also make
it less attractive for users to submit bugs, something we really want -
right?
A relevant example: Googling "Service did not respond to signal" right
now gives me a link to the relevant bug report at
https://bugs.freenetproject.org/bug_view_advanced_page.php?bug_id=3624.
The report contains important information about the current status of
the bug, its variations, technical information behind it, and even more
importantly, what we need from our users in order to fix it. This
information is no more available to users because of the login screen,
and will soon be removed from Google altogether. Do you seriously
suggest that we start duplicating bug information on uservoice, and
regularly transfer information between those two?
Please reconsider if you really think we should move towards making our
bug tracker more closed as opposed to opening it up and letting our
users contribute directly to the developing workflow.
