Please be aware of the fact that a lot of GSoC projects suffer from the unfortunate death of not being merged after GSoC is finished. This is somehow justified: Students usually disappear after GSoC, and it is difficult to merge someone's code when that someone is gone. I would vote for making merge-ability one of your primary goals. Its better to have less new code than not having it merged into the official distribution at all.
