And why is this approach better than having an "Export reference" option
in a taskbar icon or in something like FreeWeb?

The client itself may not need it, but the user using the client will,
and again - the client will be most user's primary interface to Freenet.
Exposing this functionality via FCP is *clearly* the most elegant and
flexible approach, and does not rule out the use-case you desire.
