Up to now I took that into account by calling the Java setup program 
during install and have it update freenet.ini. This way we got all new 
prefs automatically with their default value, until we manage to put 
them in a GUI. (The really really serious geek configs don't need a GUI 
anyway as they can change it themselves).

And although using the GUI configurator for configuration, I will 
continue to produce an initial .ini file with the Java setup script 
during install so new prefs wouldn't be lost.

There are some, even expensive programs using consoles...
