Some time ago JV suggested using a light background color in checkboxes to show what the current right for a given user / group is when the right isn't explicitely set (for instance a 50% transparent green background in the checkbox if the XWiki.XWikiGuest user has the edit right) -> this concept might be worth exploring further...
