I've seen "redundant" DHCP services implemented as follows (with the NT
DHCP server, but this applies just as well to almost any other DHCP
server):
- setup two (or more) DHCP servers
- only one of those should run, at any given time
- setup DHCP relays to forward DHCP packets to all DHCP servers
arranged as a redundant cluster
- setup a cron/at/whatever job to do the following when running on the
master DHCP server regularly:
- stop the DHCP server
- backup the lease database
- restart the DHCP server
- setup a cron/at/whatever job to do the following when running on a
slave DHCP server regularly:
- copy the backed up lease database from the master DHCP server
Recovery is as simple as picking a new master DHCP server and starting
DHCP. Make these jobs run every hour and at most you'll lose one hour's
worth of leases.
If you can programmatically update lease databases (i.e., the format is
known) and you have lease event logging functionality in the DHCP server
software you use (MS DHCP does), then you can keep your slave DHCP
servers' lease databases almost constantly upto date.
Lease event logging can be used to: update DDNS, update other DHCP lease
databases, update whatever database you think is useful to update with
hostname/IP information.
