They are by default in cm. 1 in = 72.27 pt = 2.54 cm. 8pt =
8*(2.54/72.27)cm = 0.28112.
We have unit support halfway done, and it absolutely needs to be all the
way done before a 1.0 release.

You should in general su -, also for security reasons. Not that it's that
dangerous on a one-user box.
