hi DDN community -
are there any stores in your town that sell second-hand (i.e.
refurbished) computers? are you a gnu/linux enthusiast?
you might want to call such stores and ask them if they sell any
computers with gnu/linux preinstalled. stores that are selling second
hand computers are beginning to "test the waters" in selling gnu/linux
systems.
whether these stores decide to put out a few gnu/linux computers on
their shelves depends entirely upon whether there is a community
demand for them.
it doesn't make much sense to create an artificial demand by flooding
these stores with phone calls.
but it does make sense for these stores to know that there is a
growing demand for gnu/linux computers in our communities. i tend
to favor the ubuntu version of gnu/linux, which is designed and
produced in south africa. my smartest friends tell me it is the
gnu/linux they prefer. http://www.ubuntulinux.com
like almost every distribution of gnu/linux, ubuntu comes with the
free openoffice.org suite, which includes a free word processor,
spreadsheet , drawing program and presentation program. ubuntu
also comes with the firefox web browser. ubuntu runs in 128 megs of
memory, which means it can work on many older computers.
