Although the bandplan indicates digital in the 1800 to 1810 sliver, it
also permits CW as well. So it is OK to operate CW in that window
according to the bandplan. Personally, one would think that they would
have followed the convention of CW on the bottom of the band,
particularly the higher speed ops and have digital in the transition
area where voice modes are intended to start.
But what I really don't understand is why the ARRL does not follow the
IARU Region 2 bandplan which recommends digimodes from 1800 to 1840
(along with CW).
Looking longer term, and based upon the Region 1 and Region 3
recommendations, it would seem that the digital area should move higher
up. It would also provide more expansion room if digital becomes more
popular on this band. As it stands right now, if you followed the
bandplans in 1 and 3, you would not be able to communicate with each
other (between those regions) via digital modes since Region 1 is
recommending 1838 to 1842 and Region 3 is 1830 to 1834. One wonders what
the delegates are thinking when they come up with these plans.
By the way, if I read it correctly, the Region 2 bandplan shows:
1810 - 1838 CW
1838 - 1840 Digimode except
Packet, CW
1840 - 1842 Digimode except
Packet, Phone, CW
1842 - 2000 Phone, CW
Does this mean that the 1840 - 1842 sliver is appropriate for voice, CW,
and digimodes (except packet)?
How come there is no packet recommendations or are they recommending
that packet not be used on 160?
