Actually, I was about to propose to host an overlay in the version
control system itself (just the ebuilds, wether they depend on other
additional software external to DirectFB.org or not, they would just
link to them by dependency in Gentoo), and some of them would pull the
released tarballs, some of them "head", actually I don't see what's
wrong with pulling directly from the version control system itself. It
just eases installing latest sources for gentoo users which really need
to try the latest, for testing new features discussed on the ML, etc.
The overlay can either be "registered" in the official gentoo overlay
list, or an overlay definition file to be downloaded and just
additionally pointed at in /etc/layman/layman.cfg could be provided.
From the projects I know, something like this (the additional overlay
definition file) is how it's done at http://www.freevo.org or
http://www.linkstationwiki.net (at least the Genlink for the Linkstation
Pro, for which I built Gentoo as an alternative firmware).

My 2 cents, as well :)
Of course, I don't insist on any solution, we should discuss this...
