I don't think DirectFB is supposed to replace X11 on the desktop.
It is however a good alternative to X11 for a couple of special
applications (especially when it comes to embedded devices).

X11 based on DirectFB as it is implemented by XDirectFB is a
reasonable solution for your desktop and offers a few extras that
plain X11 doesn't give you (for example better integration of
DirectFB applications). With the latest improvements on the multi
application core XDirectFB could already be a good choice for your
desktop.

We'd be happy if XDirectFB would at some point be included in the
XFree86 distribution. Most probably this will have to wait until the
DirectFB API has settled and version 1.0 is released

If a group of talented developers would try to design a new windowing
system for the desktop in order to replace X11 and they were looking
for a graphics engine to base their efforts on, DirectFB would
probably be a good choice.

Debian has DirectFB packages but I don't know of any distribution
that includes XDirectFB yet.

I don't have any numbers and I'd say it depends a lot on the gfx card
and the state of the drivers in DirectFB as well as in XFree86.

There is a conceptual difference that might cause better performance
on DirectFB and that's the fact that less Expose events are generated
on XDirectFB. This is because the window stack is double-buffered and
windows don't need to be repainted by the application if they become
obscured by other windows.

Salut, Sven
